My name is Katelin, and I am a police officer in South Jersey. Just facing any diversity no matter your occupation, you can imagine how much of a "fish out of water" you can feel as a female police officer. It comes with its share of challenges to say the least. And that is exactly what I felt when I met Dimitri Collins for the first time.
A couple of years ago, I was in a week-long training to be a Physical Fitness Instructor at the Camden County Police Academy. One day, the class was instructed on Drill & Ceremony by none other than Dimitri herself.
Impressed and intrigued on how Dimitri overcame and adjusted to being a minority in a "man's world", motivated me to want to get to know her better while also hoping to fill my own void. I am a member of the Gloucester County Women in Law Enforcement Group and every year we have a Women's breakfast in March to celebrate Women's Month. After the President of our group requested ideas for a keynote speaker, I knew Dimitri was our answer! Her eloquent and motivating speech reminded every female, race, and law enforcement officer in the room that we each carry a different tool for a common purpose. How each and every one of us is important and while the diversity of law enforcement is growing so is our power "to make a positive difference".
